New York

I've been in New York several times, the first time was in August 1988 when I first walked the American soil on my way with the Lolitas to Memphis,TN to cut an album under the direction of Alex Chilton at "Ardent" studios. I was of course very impressed by the skyscrapers of Manhattan and it was only after the recordings in Memphis, TN that we spent about ten days in the East Village. We even had a live show at the legendary Wah Wah Hut Café on Avenue A & 7th Street. We came another time for a month in 1990,to record our 4th album, this time under the direction of Chris Spedding.
An unforgettable memory during this stay was a show we went to see at Fat Tuesday's, the legendary club located on 190 Third Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street,
with guitar legend Les Paul.
I came another time in 1994 in Transit on my way to the West Indies and stayed for 2 month. By the same time a former roomate & friend from Berlin: Maria Zastrow lived in New York. We ran into each other in an "Underground Bar" on Ludlow street called "Max Fish" where she worked as a bartender. From then hung around all the time and had the best time in clubs and bars, we got see many bands and shows.
My last visit in New York was winter 1997. I had the pleasant surprise that a concert by my friend Alex Chilton was scheduled at the "Knitting Factory". It was a very special concert since in the middle of his set the power went out so he ended the show with an acoustic guitar in an exceptional, campfire style atmosphere. When in 2016 I met his wife Laura after his death, she gave me a CD which was actually the live recording of this concert, she was not at the show back then, but had contributed to the release of this CD. She was very glad to offer it to me when she got to know that I was in the audience.

New Orleans
I stranded in New Orleans,La in January 1993. Just like when I first got to Berlin, I hardly didn'nt know anybody in town and I had to make friends.
Thank to Alex Chilton I found a cottage to rent located
on 2425 Barracks Street in "Treme".

I spent most of my timein the hottest Clubs in New Orleans. "Joe's Cozy Corner", "Treme Music Hall", "Trombone Shorty's", "Little People's Place","Maple Leaf", "Kemp's", "Rock'n'Bowl", "First Stop Lounge", "Mother in Law Lounge" or "Tipipitinas" where I saw a bunch of outstanding musicians as Kermit Ruffins, "Clarence Gatemouth" Brown , Eddy Bo, Ernie K-Doe, Jesse Hill, Rosie Ledet, Rockin' Dopsie Jr, many Brass Bands as "Rebirth", "New Birth", "Little Rascals", "Soul Rebels", "Dirty Dozen"...

Obviously there was no way I could compete with all this great musicians but I thought that their was no real Rock'n'Roll underground scene like in Berlin, New York or Paris. That's how came the Idea to create events with all kinds of musicians from different backrounds. That's when I met Josephine, a lady from Venezuela who ran a bar on Melpomene street, in the Lower Garden District.
I talked her to let me me organize and host weekly shows at Pepina's Bar & Restaurant.

I started organizing a weekly show: The Lendary Coco $how @ Pepinas. The idea was to have a group with a Bass and Drums, me on the guitar and invite various musicians to back me.
One of him was a New Yorker bassist, Joe Drake (a former member of the New York group "Band of Outsiders"), whom I had met in New York  in 1988. While he stayed later a little while in Berlin, I convinced him to join me in New Orleans. Joe was a very pessimistic fellow, always talking about his failures, bad luck or disillusionment, It's me who named him "Lucky Joe", name he is still baring.
New Orleans has allways a lot of visitors which give me the opportunity to ask a lot of artists who came by to be part of the "Coco $how" @ Pepina's. Among them beside of Lucky Joe I had for instance Jacques Palminger (now a famous entertainer living in Hamburg, Germany), Yvonne Ducksksworth , Melinda Pendleton (who was hosting the Kitchen Sink show on WWOZ ) Kate Samworth (former Bass player from Waschington D.C Band "Fire Party"., Brezel Goering & Françoise Cactus (Stereo Total), Peggy O 'Neil(The Gories), Jerry Anderson (Kermit Ruffins drummer), Scary Mary ....

New Orleans is very caribean and many times when I watched the boats on the Mississippi river,I began scheming plans to travel further south. As far as I did not have a resident visa for the USA, I managed to take a Flight to Pointe à Pitre, in Guadeloupe(French West Indies) allthough I didn't know nobody there.

I arrived from the USA via Puerto Rico to Pointe à Pitre. I had never set foot there and knew no one there. I had found in books a city that seemed interesting, not too touristy and located on the Atlantic coast: Le Moule!
I lived there for 8 years and I must say that It was a very happy time. I had settled in an old Cabin that cost me almost nothing. For living I took care of houses owned by locals who worked in metropolitan France. I maintained them and took care of renting them during the absence of the owners. It brought me a little money that was enough for me to live. The rest of the time I was doing music. I started to join a Reggae / Dancehall band that did not last long but that allowed me to continue on Trio with Laurent Arçon on the Drums and Guy Pierre on the Bass the Caribbean Combo.

Caraïb Combo

Guy Pierre Chapel - Laurent Arçon - Coco Nut 1998

This group allowed me to play in bars at parties, weddings or other. One moment we were hired by the Director of the Media Library of the Moule, Marie Claude Pernelle, to accompany young rappers some of whom continued on this path, such as:
Mak Paro, Osteel MC or Maalkhema.

Subsequently, I joined a Jazz variety formation: Hop Ti'mal with the singer Geneviève Lilong with whom I had a friendship that lasts until today.

Genevieve Lilong (Kilijah) - Coco Nut 2001

I also spent a lot of time with a former Quadrille musician: Fabien Cologer, with whom I had a good time chatting, playing with my Creole.

Coco Nut - Elie Cologer 1998

At Le Moule there was a restaurant bar: La Bananeraie where every Saturday evening a band called Tony & Co.Their leader was Tony Faisans, a renowned guitarist who recorded with "Les Rapaces" or Clarinetist / Saxophonist Eddy Gustave.

Tony & Co ended their shows with a Jam Session. and one night whenI grabbed the Mic and sang a Rocker, I remember it was "Whole lotta shakin' going on". Tony really enjoyed it and offered me to join the band. The Band played mostly Jazz tunes and Caribean standards but Tony just loved Rock'N'Roll and decided to include a couple of Rockers that I would sing !

Berlin 1981 - 1993

Berlin
I arrived in Berlin by train (in transit through East Germany) in August 1981.
I had never set foot there and I didn't know anybody there.
I just had accommodation for a week, so I had to hurry to find something.
It was the great time of squats and my goal was Kreuzberg. I quickly gained a foothold and I met Françoise Cactus who helped me find accommodation with friends of her.

At that time Berlin seemed to me "the place to be", located at the heart of the Cold War conflict, I had also noticed that David Bowie and Iggy Pop had settled there.
To keep West Berlin alive, the west german government left a lot of freedoms, rents were low, squats popped out like mushrooms making west Berlin a very favorable to underground culture.
Quickly I was ready to make sound !

I managed to learn 3 chords on guitar wich was the trend by than. There was a movement in Berlin called "Geniale Dilletanten" and the city was talled with "self-proclaimed" artists such as "Tedliche Doris", "Liason Dangereuse" and "Camping Sex", a new wave that electrified  Berlins underground scene.
It was also with Françoise Cactus with whom I started a band. We lived under the same roof, I had found a drum kit and we started, the two of us, covers of Elvis, Françoise Hardy or Stooges.

Afterwards we found Valerie Mc Glynn, an expatriate From Ireland, who played the Bass and we named the band "Les Lolitas" after Stanley Kubricks famous movie.
Other members were Tutti Frutti (a.k.a Michele Veleno)on the guitar, who joined Lolitas in 1986, Olga La Basse on the Bass, who came in 1987 and Tex Morton on the guitar who came in 1992.
Unlike most West Berliners, I wanted to know also East Berlin.
It was thanks to a British expat, Mark reeder (who directed the b movie thread, documentary/fiction on the underground scene of West Berlin in the 80s) that I had contacts that allowed me to get to know East Berliners.
This gave us the opportunity to do many clandestine concerts in East Germany, a totally exciting experience with a unique flavour that is hard to describe these days. The concerts were usually held in premises that were located at the Protestant church, the only places that were not managed by the state. The concerts were held with bands from the east who lent us their instruments on site.
Everything had to be done discreetly so as not to be spotted by the STASI, it was a bit risky, but we probably were not aware ot the danger.

The band was moving forward and in 1986 we recorded our first vinyl for a Hamburg label: "What's so Funny About" recorded by the British Nainz Watts.
The trendy german music magazine Spex reviewed our record  best album and best band of the year., describing us, by the way, as an all a girl band!
I was at the time a fan of the French label "New Rose Records" which had, among many other bands, in its catalog the Cramps, Gun Club, Johnny Thunders also I went to file our vinyl hope that the label is interested in producing us. It was a hit, the boss of New Rose, Patrick Mathé even said in an interview that we were according to him the best French underground rock band. I think he had a crush on Françoise and that I was more of an Idiot.
His project at the time was to have our next record produced by an artist who was also on his catalogue: Alex Chilton.
Recordings were made august 1988 at
Ardent Studio in Memphis,TN.

I was'nt actually so excited to go to the United States.
I saw this country as a bunch of degenerate and dumb. I didn't know anything about Alex chilton and the fact that some people worshipped him discouraged me from wanting to know him.
Once I got there, I realized how
thrilling the United States are. After we landed in New York, we drove to Memphis where Alex was waiting for us.
Alex immediately liked me very much. After asking me my date of birth, allways his first question when he got to know somebody, it came out that we were both born under the sign of the tiger and capricorn. That's probably what made me a little "special" to him. Also the fact that I didn't know much about his musical career, I think it bothered him when people talked to him about the Box Tops or Big Star.We remained until his death very good friends.
At the time, Alex was living in New Orleans and after recording our album "Fusée d'amour", Alex invited us to stay there. We even played there, in a blues bar called "Benny's".
It was a revelation for me, I realized that the music that influenced me the most came from there and that I had to come back  and live there.
